In oriente sidus (from Polish)

Here is a Polish Christmas carol translated into Latin, which Aleksandra Klęczar was kind enough to send to me from Poland (she teaches in the Classics Department at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow). In her note, she explains that the translator of most of the carols which she has sent is the famous Polish classicist Ryszard Ganszyniec (1888-1958).

This carol is called In oriente sidus in Latin, Jakaż to gwiazda? in Polish. You can listen to a performance of the Polish carol at YouTube, and here are the chords to the song.

In oriente sidus

In oriente sideus refulget,
sidus recentis nominis.
Magi proclamant:|"Popul(e), exsulta,
sidus salutis hominis!"

Currunt Monarchae stellam sequentes
et post Monarchas populus.
Stella radiante Salvator mundi
in terris est annuntiatus.

Ille ut esset nobis exemplar
amoris atque victimae,
secundum Dei arcana fata
natus in summ(a) egestate.

Stramento vili caput reclinat,
ut signum palam martyris.
Quae mundo vitam datura novam,
latura praemium victoris.

Jakaż to gwiazda?

Jakaż to gwiazda błyszczy na wschodzie,
gwiazda nowego imienia?
Mędrcy wołają: "Ciesz się narodzie,
to gwiazda twego zbawienia."

Biegną Królowie za jej promieniem
a za Królami tłum ludu;
bo im ta gwiazda świeci zbawieniem,
bo im zwiastuje cud cudu.

Ten, co nam później miał być przykładem
w miłości i poświęceniu,
dziś niezgłębionych wyroków śladem
zrodzon w nędzy, poniżeniu.

W garstce barłogu skrył świętą głowę,
palmę światłości męczeństwa,
co światu życie miała dać nowe,
nad błędem odnieść zwycięstwa.
